Certified Forklift Technician Training
The Certified Forklift Technician (CFT) training is a nationally recognized certification aligned with ISO standards. Developed in partnership with the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC), this comprehensive, industry-driven program is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled technicians. Through a combination of hands-on training and assessments, participants gain the skills required to maintain, service, and repair forklift trucks, preparing them for success in the industry.
About This Program
As forklift dealers face a shortage of qualified technicians, MHEDA has partnered with the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) to develop the Certified Forklift Technician (CFT) training program. The purpose of the program is to certify and recognize those who demonstrate the necessary skills in the maintenance, service, and repair of forklift vehicles. The CFT training equips individuals in the industry with the tools to succeed.
Course Outline
Before obtaining the certification, individuals must complete an online assessment and a performance-based, hands-on assessment. Additionally, an optional e-learning course is available, depending on the individual’s level of experience in the industry.
- Optional E-Learning Course: A 55-hour online training course with optional hands-on training at a local dealership, based on the 20 key activities in the CFT standards.
- Online Assessment: One online assessment made up of 92 multiple-choice questions based on industry-defined standards. Individuals must pass to progress to the hands-on portion.
- Hands-On Assessment: A performance-based evaluation where individuals must demonstrate their understanding of the 20 key activities at an authorized forklift dealership.
Certification
After successfully completing the program, individuals will have the option to download their certificate(s), purchase a CFT arm patch, and/or download the key work activities document. Additionally, they will receive a silver-embossed version of the credential via mail.
CFT Program Options
In order to qualify for the CFT training program, individuals or organizations must meet the specific eligibility criteria outlined in one of three scenarios. These scenarios are designed to address the unique needs of the material handling industry.
Scenario #1
A school provides the curriculum and pre-qualification exam, which allows individuals to earn their prerequisite for hands-on training conducted through a local forklift dealer’s apprenticeship program.
Scenario #2
A school provides the curriculum, online exam, hands-on training, and hands-on assessment in partnership with local forklift dealerships. Ideal schools are those that offer an advanced forklift program.
Scenario #3
Current technicians can earn their CFT by completing the online exam and hands-on assessment. The 55-hour curriculum and hands-on training are optional and can be based on their experience.
Technician Recruitment Resources
MHEDA and MSSC have created the video “A Day in the Life of a Forklift Technician,” designed to support recruitment efforts. This resource will help attract potential candidates by providing a clear and relatable view of this profession in the material handling industry.
