Navigating Growth and Innovation

By Nicole Needles

In the realm of protective guarding solutions, SpaceGuard Products stands as a beacon of innovation and reliability. Founded with a vision to pioneer facility security, the company has evolved through industry, business structure and company culture changes and has blossomed into what it is today. What has remained constant, however, is its dedication to innovation and serving its customers.

“Our mission statement for SpaceGuard is to deliver quality and innovative solutions on time with first-in-class service, before, during and after the sale,” said Eddie Murphy, president of SpaceGuard Products. “We really try to take ownership in all of our orders well after they leave our docks.”

SpaceGuard’s mission statement underscores its commitment to delivering quality and innovative solutions with exceptional service. Murphy emphasizes the company’s dedication to ownership and support throughout the entire customer journey. Transitioning from a culture focused solely on production to one prioritizing people, SpaceGuard fosters a culture of recognition and trust.

“I am a true believer that human resources are truly the most important resources to our business. It’s really a result of our folks. We do what we call Recognition Wednesday. We take time to recognize our employees and really just drive that continuous culture,” Murphy said.

Reflecting on industry changes since his tenure began in 2008, Murphy highlights a seismic shift in material handling dynamics. Economic downturns and technological advancements have reshaped the landscape, necessitating adaptability. SpaceGuard has not only kept pace but strategically anticipated these trends.

A prime example is SpaceGuard’s entry into the robotic guarding market. When the industry trend moved toward broader automation, SpaceGuard recognized the growing need for safe and reliable robotic guarding solutions. This realization led to the creation of the RageWire® brand, which introduced a costeffective and simple solution to the robotic guarding market.

Similarly, their recent entry into the rack repair market with the Centurion™ Pallet Rack Repair line was perfectly timed. With OSHA’s increased focus on storage rack safety, SpaceGuard is well-positioned to address this growing concern.

By expanding beyond traditional boundaries, SpaceGuard seeks to address unmet needs in the market while enhancing its value proposition to customers and partners alike.

“We’re really evolving in what we’re offering, from an engineering and design perspective, all the way through to supporting the folks who are actually installing those products,” Murphy said.

Customer expectations have evolved in tandem with industry dynamics, demanding agility and responsiveness. SpaceGuard meets these demands by prioritizing on-time delivery, clear communication and automation.

“It was a chance for us to see what else is in the marketplace and where we can really grow,” Murphy said. “We constantly ask ourselves how we can help build ourselves up and become more value-added for our distributor partners.”

By staying attuned to customer needs and market shifts, the company remains poised to deliver exceptional value in an ever-changing landscape.

SpaceGuard prioritizes a culture of continuous learning and growth. By empowering and encouraging employees to pursue their passions and apply them to their work, SpaceGuard fosters an environment that supports individual development. This aligns perfectly with one of the company’s core values, “Grow or Go,” which emphasizes that both individual and company growth are essential for success. Through investment in employee development and ongoing training, SpaceGuard ensures a skilled workforce capable of driving innovation and excellence.

As SpaceGuard Products charts its course forward, it remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence, innovation and customer-centricity. With a focus on continuous improvement and market adaptation, the company is poised to navigate the complexities of the material handling industry with confidence and resilience.

“So, when asked how we’re going to continue to grow, not only are we putting new products out there, we’re doing fabrication and manufacturing for other OEMs. So we’re constantly trying to build off of what we do really well,” Murphy said. “That’s where our next challenge is; how do we grow beyond what we’ve always done, not just stay happy with the way things have been?”
